Year 3

Core Clerkship The core Emergency Medicine Clerkship is a four week clinical experience located at Memorial Medical Center’s main site, Memorial Medical Center Affiliates in Lincoln, Jacksonville and Taylorville, and Saint John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. Students will work a number of shifts at all hospitals performing the initial evaluation of patients, developing differential diagnoses and treatment plans while continuing to follow their patients’ progress in the Emergency Department. Goals for Year 3 Medical Humanities students. Goal: We aim to create dialogue and stimulate reflection that aids in nurturing compassionate healers Our mission is to help doctors-in-training gain deeper insights into their own assumptions, beliefs and perspectives so they can hone their empathetic as well as medical expertise, thus creating more effective patient/physician relationships. Year 4 Elective

SIU 4th year students not bound for Emergency Medicine residencies but wanting more experience in the Emergency Department may choose to enroll in the Year 4 Elective. Students in the elective will be given primary care responsibility for Emergency Department patients under the supervision of Emergency Department physicians. Students will engage in the following activities; patient workups, documentation of patient evaluations, communication with Faculty regarding patient care, and performance of a variety of procedures.

Year 4 Sub-Intensive
