Psychiatrist Kalyan Kandra, MD, named top educator

Kaylan Kandra, MD, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine, has earned the Illinois Psychiatric Society's 2024 Educator of the Year award. "Dr. Kandra is passionate about academic psychiatry and is dedicated to training the future generation of psychiatrists," the Illinois Psychiatry Society writes. "He loves teaching and aims to shape the future of mental health care through education." Kandra completed a psychiatry residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2019, following medical school training at J.J.M. Medical College in India. Learn more

Clerkship The Department of Psychiatry provides education and training in each year of the medical school curriculum establishing the pre-requisite didactic and clinical knowledge as well as clinical skills for interested students to become successful candidates for psychiatric residency training. Psychiatry Resident Program Application Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry residency training program in Springfield, Illinois. Applications must be received in ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) by October 15th of each year. Interviews are generally scheduled on Fridays from November through January. Interviews last the entire day to allow candidates the opportunity to meet with a number of faculty and residents and to visit an inpatient location. Final selection decisions are made by the Psychiatry Residency Admissions Committee (PRAC)
