Students Receive New Infection Prevention Award

Congratulations to Dr. Rory Mills (bottom), Class of 2019, and Shelby Markel (top), MS3, student recipients of the Infection Prevention Award presented by Dr. Subbash Chaudhary, chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at SIU Medicine. Dr. Chaudhary and his family endowed the new annual award to recognize role modeling and leadership for pediatric infection control. The award is given to two students and a resident each year. The winners received a plaque and $500 toward medical education activities or materials. The resident's award winner will be announed at the pediatric

Students spruce up medical district neighborhoods

SIU medical students got out of the classrooms and clinics and into the community for the annual Student Day of Service on April 14. Nearly 100 young learners tackled projects in the Springfield neighborhoods around the Mid-Illinois Medical District. Activities included alley clean-up, maintenance and landscaping at Enos Park, Pillsbury Mills, McClernand Elementary School, and the community gardens. Students tackle teambuilding course

The 2021-22 Lincoln Scholars Program students and the Physician Assistant students in the Class of 2023 joined forces on May 29 to complete the Touch of Nature (TON) TEAMS course. They did a great job building connections, learning important team concepts, and worked together to solve all the challenges that were set before them. The TEAMS course was brought back as part of the PA Program orientation activities, as a result of suggestions from the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and our alumni who felt it had been an important component of the PA Program curriculum.

Students take skin safety poolside

May is National Melanoma Awareness Month. On Saturday, May 25, SIU medical students hosted a kick-off event at the Nelson Center pool to raise awareness about the importance of using sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent skin cancer. Fourth-year students Allison Frey, Brea Sturm and Tom Herrmann set up an information table and free sunscreen dispensers at poolside​. Patrons slathered on sunscreen and picked up solar-activated wristbands, IMPACT Melanoma chapstick and useful tips on skin safety. Students Underrepresented in Medicine Find Their Home at SIU

Thirteen students who are underrepresented in medicine (URM) began their medical training in August at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) defines underrepresented in medicine as "racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." As American lifespans increase due to progress made on other medical frontiers, the toll from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) grows. More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease, and by 2050 this number could rise as high as 16 million, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Study: Number of children ingesting marijuana edibles spikes

The volume of cases of children accidentally consuming cannabis edibles has grown alarmingly over the past five years, according to a new study in the journal of Pediatrics. Marit Tweet, MD , a medical toxicologist at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, led the research. During that time period, the number of states allowing adult recreational use more than doubled, and accidental ingestion by children age 6 or younger increased 1,375 percent. Study of Green Tea Extract May Yield Key to Hearing Protection for Cancer Patients

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS: If you could take a drug that would help cure your cancer, but it would make you go deaf, would you still take the drug? Cisplatin is a widely used anticancer drug that unfortunately carries some major side effects, including hearing loss and damage to the nerves and kidneys. Its high toxicity often requires dose reductions or the use of less effective alternate drugs. Cisplatin-induced hearing loss can range from 50-75 percent in adults.
