Resident Scholarly Activity

The SIU Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery residency program prides itself on our commitment to engaging residents in high-quality, meaningful, and fruitful research activities. Our residents are allotted three months of research time during their training. Resident Well-Being

If you are in crisis, please call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or chat online at 988lifeline.org/chat . Residency is a time of tremendous personal and professional growth. However, medicine is a high-risk profession for development of stress, burnout and depression, especially for residents. A majority of residents show symptoms of burnout and about 30% of residents experience some level of depression during residency. Junior residents are at the highest risk. Tragically, the United States loses up to 400 physicians per year to suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of death

Resident Wellness Committee

The SIU Family Medicine Residency Wellness Committee is comprised of behaviorists, faculty and residents. Residency wellness is taken very seriously and a formalized plan is in place. Well-being may be positively increased by interacting with patients and colleagues at work, being intellectually stimulated and by feeling that one is making a difference/helping. In addition, self-care activities, including exercise, getting plenty of rest and connecting with others, are beneficial. We want our Family Medicine Residents to thrive, not just survive. The plan includes: Balint, once a month. Six

Resident/fellow life

A well-balanced lifestyle is encouraged at the SIU Family Medicine Residency Program-Carbondale. Many social events are organized through the program to facilitate a sense of comradery and community with our residents, faculty, and staff. With Southern Illinois University’s main campus located in Carbondale, residents are able to reside in a low cost of living community but still have that college town vibe. The University brings diversity to the city in respect to dining options, shopping, and recreational/social events. Southern Illinois houses several public Lakes (Lake of Egypt/Cedar Lake
