The SIU pediatric residency program consists of core lecture series and clinic experience.

Core lecture series

The SIU pediatric residency program’s core lecture series is a rotating three-year curriculum taken from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academic Pediatric Society which prepares residents for boards. SIU has a variety of departmental lectures attended by residents and faculty to discuss current cases and recent pediatric literature. Looking closely at clinical experiences ensures our residents get a broad picture of the entire field of pediatrics, with all its subspecialties.

Clinic experience

The patient population at SIU is diverse in that it’s comprised of both underserved as well as insured individuals. SIU pediatric residents will have their own panel of patients and have the opportunity to follow patients throughout the three-year residency term, watching them grow and develop. SIU residents act as a the primary care physician which means if patients need help with school, insurance companies, or ordering medical equipment, they will come to their resident for assistance. This hands-on approach allows residents to learn and experience advocating for patients' needs as well as navigate various healthcare systems.
